2016-2017 Gold Tones Audition InfoAuditions for the 2016-2017 Gold Tones will be held at CFHS during the last week of school, May 23-26. Sign-up sheets for times will be posted in the band hallway. Auditions are open to all students who will be in band next year and will be held for the following instruments: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar, and drums.
Auditioning is a requirement for all students who wish to be in Gold Tones next year; students who do not audition or who audition but do not make the Gold Tones may participate in Jazz Ensemble Audition Requirements:Scales (Everyone but drummers)Understanding and immediacy of scales is essential to developing the ability to improvise and play jazz. For the audition, students will be asked to play one scale from the following lists. If a student is successful on one leveled list, they will be asked to play another scale from the next list. Students should practice all scales in at least one octave, though full-range is preferred. At a minimum, Gold Tones members should know their 12 major scales.
Level 1 Scales: G, C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, and Db Major (Concert Key) Level 2 Scales: Remaining major scales, natural minor scales Level 3 Scales: Mixolydian, Dorian, and Aeolian Scales (All 12 keys) Level 4 Scales: Whole tone and octatonic scales Need help with scales? See page 20-21 of the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Handbook here: http://www.jazzbooks.com/mm5/download/FQBK-handbook.pdf Grooves (Drummers)Drummers should be prepared to demonstrate up to 16 measures of playing time at a variety of tempos in the following styles:
Swing, Double Time Swing, Ballad (with brushes), Funk/Fusion/Rock, Bossa Nova Prepared TuneWind Players: Perform the tune “Doxy,” including the first chorus of Miles Davis’s solo, included in this packet. As an option, you may improvise an additional solo chorus after playing the transcribed solo. It is highly recommended that you listen to the original Miles Davis recording of the tune and emulate his playing as closely as possible. You will play with a recorded rhythm section--recordings are available here.
Piano/Bass/Guitar: Perform the head (first 16 bars) of the tune “Doxy.” Piano players have chord voicings in the left hand. It is highly recommended that you listen to the original Miles Davis recording of the tune. As an option (strongly preferred), you can demonstrate your ability to “comp” (or walk a bass line) on the changes for the next 16 bar chorus. You will play with a pre-recorded rhythm section with your instrument taken out. Play-along recordings are available here: Piano/Guitar Accompaniment Bass Accompaniment Drums: Drummers will be asked to perform Groove 18 (fast) from Tommy Igoe’s Groove Essentials (included in audition packet). You will be asked to play one time through the form with the play-along recording. See Ms. Lambert for details.
